Yes, this has happened to me personally.
I had applied to a local university and my background was an extraordinarily strong match for the job requirements.
The interview went well, but I was not offered the position. I discovered a few weeks later through two independent inside contacts that I was taken off the short-list for consideration because I was too white, too male and too old (47).
