1.Have a resume for each target market / industry so that your resume is laser focused. Review sample job descriptions for your field, listing keywords and phrases, required skills qualifications and experience needed. Tailor your resume toward the job description that you are applying for. No job description? Ask for one. 2.Take out the Objective if you are staying in the same career.
3.Take out the Objective if you have a Summary paragraph, as the information does not need to be repeated.
4.Streamline your Summary paragraph by starting sentences (after the first one) with action verbs and eliminating the fluff of too many adjectives.
7.Keep bulleted accomplishments to 2 lines with an occasional 3 liner, if necessary.
8. Emphasize quantifiable results rather than the finer details of how you did it.
9. Give yourself some space: have no less than .8 margins all the way around.
10. Keep the resume to the last 15 years, if possible. List previous experience that relates as “Prior Positions” with only your title and the company name.
11. Eliminate details about extracurricular activities, courses and internships, if 5 years out of college.
12. Take dates off of your education unless it was less than 10 years ago.
13. Remove irrelevant courses and outdated technology.
14. Only list certifications that relate to your industry.
